For many of us between the ages of 25 and 30, the word Friday has two meanings. It’s the happiest day of the week, but it’s also the title of the viral 2011 song by a 13-year-old girl from California, called Rebecca Black. Within a month it had been viewed 30 million times on YouTube and Black became the most googled person in the world that year.

With lyrics such as “Yesterday was Thursday/ Today is Friday” and “Gotta have my bowl/ Gotta have cereal” and a ladleful of autotune, Friday spawned countless parodies and was pronounced “the worst song ever” by the internet.

The hate soon became even more personal: Black received online comments such as “I hope you cut yourself and I hope you get an eating disorder so you look pretty”. The police got involved after death threats were sent to her house and she had to be homeschooled for two years.
